Sample Band 8 Essay (Academic Writing Task 2)

Question: Nowadays, many people have cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance. Why are they doing this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Answer

Nowadays, an increasing number of people opt for plastic surgery in order to improve their appearance. This is motivated by a variety of different factors, including the pursuit of physical beauty, the desire to feel more confident and secure, and the expectation that such procedures will lead to better job prospects or social acceptance. However, this trend has sparked much debate about its merits or drawbacks, and I am of the opinion that is mostly a negative trend.

On one hand, this practice can be seen as a positive development as it enables individuals to enhance their physical attributes, thereby improving their self-esteem and boosting social confidence. Additionally, those who undergo cosmetic surgery have reported feeling improved mental wellbeing after the process. These desirable outcomes, however, should not lull us into turning the blind eye to the negative aspects of cosmetic surgery.

One of the dangers of aesthetic surgery is that it may lead people to become fixated on achieving an unrealistic standard of beauty, one that is based on societal expectations rather than individual preference. Additionally, while most procedures are successful in terms of producing desired results, there is always a risk that something could go wrong during a procedure or even years after it. Physical side effects such as infection and scarring aren’t the only danger; patients can also experience emotional distress if they are unhappy with the outcome of their treatment.

In conclusion, it appears that while cosmetic surgery can offer beneficial outcomes for some in terms of improved appearance and self-confidence, the potential risks cannot be ignored when considering such treatments. Those who contemplate undergoing this type of procedure must be aware of all possible implications before deciding about their health and well-being.

Sample Band 8 Report (Academic Writing Task 1)

Question: The charts below provide information about the unemployment rate amongst men and women over the age of 60 in Belgium, USA, Japan and Australia, in the years 1980 and 2000. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Bar Chart Percentage Of Unemployed Men Over 60

IELTS Writing Task 1 Bar Chart Percentage Of Unemployed Women Over 60

Answer

The two charts give information about the unemployment rates among senior citizens in four different countries, Belgium, the USA, Japan and Australia, in 1980 and 2000.

Overall, it can be seen that the number of unemployed elderly men was significantly lower in 2000 than it was in 1980 in all 4 countries, while the percentage of unemployed women was relatively similar in both years.

Taking a closer look at the unemployment figures for men, the biggest change in values occurred in Belgium, with the unemployment rate of 83% in 1980 that dropped to just 20% in 2000. Australia also showed a significant decline in figures from 75% to 47%, while the remaining two countries showed much smaller fluctuations. In the USA figures declined from 78% to 65%, and in Japan the rates changed from 89% to 72%.

Moving on to women, the USA and Australia both showed increases in the unemployment rate of senior women, with the US increasing from 36% to 40%, while Australia’s ratios were quite close at 18% and 21%. In both Japan and Belgium the unemployment among 60+ women declined, from 53% in 1980 to 48% in 2000 in Japan, and from 8% in 1980 to 5% in 2000 in Belgium.

Sample Band 8 Letter (General Training Writing Task 1)

Question: You currently live in a rental apartment and the noise from your neighbours disturbs you. Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter,

  • describe how this situation affects you
  • explain what steps you have taken to address the problem
  • ask the landlord to take action to resolve the issue.

Begin your letter as follows: Dear Mr Smith,

Answer

Dear Mr. Smith,

I currently live in your rental apartment on Solstice Drive and I am writing to express my concern regarding the noise coming from my neighbours. I find it increasingly difficult to concentrate in my home due to the excessive noise from the adjacent apartments.

The soundproofing between our units is inadequate, which means that I cannot escape the intrusive sounds of music and shouting. As a result, I am unable to have a peaceful environment where I can study or sleep without being disturbed. The lack of peace and quiet is beginning to affect my mental health, as it causes me stress and anxiety.

I have taken all possible steps to address this problem, including speaking directly with the neighbours involved and informing them about the disruption they are causing, but unfortunately, nothing has changed. Therefore, I am kindly asking you to take action and ensure that my living conditions improve by upgrading the soundproofing between our units or finding another solution for this issue.

Please consider taking appropriate action as soon as possible so that this situation can be resolved quickly and effectively.

Yours sincerely,
Ariel Moore

Speaking Test, Part 1 Model Answers

1. Do you like social media?

I love social media. It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and family and to stay up-to-date on what’s going on in the world. I use it every day, and I couldn’t imagine life without it.

2. How often do you use social media?

I use social media several times a day, every day. I check my various accounts multiple times throughout the day, and I often post updates or new content myself. Social media is a big part of my life.

3. What is the effect of social media on the society?

I think social media has had a positive effect on the world. It’s brought people together and given them a platform to share their thoughts and ideas. It’s also helped to raise awareness about important issues and start important conversations.

4. What kind of things do you share with your friends on social media?

The things I usually share with my friends on social media are photos, updates on my life, interesting articles or videos that I come across, and sometimes even my thoughts and opinions on various topics. However, I always make sure to be mindful of what I share and avoid posting anything that could be inappropriate or offensive.

5. Do you think social media has made it easier or harder to maintain friendships?

I think social media can be a useful tool for maintaining friendships, but it’s important to use it mindfully and not let it replace real-life interactions with our friends. It’s easier to stay in touch with friends, especially those who live far away, through social media, but we sometimes get too absorbed in it and forget to check in with our friends or make plans to see them in person.

6. What is the importance of friends?

Friends provide companionship, support, and love. They are there for us during the good times and the bad times, and they also help to provide some clarity whenever we face any issues in life. Life would feel empty without friends.

Speaking Test, Part 2 Model Answer

Cue Card: Describe a friend of yours. You should say

– who he/she is
– where you met him/her for the first time
– what you do together
– and explain what you like about your friend.

Answer

My friend’s name is Jane and we met for the first time when we both started working at the same company. The first thing I noticed about her was how responsive and accountable she was at work, which made working with her a breeze. We quickly became friends as we had a lot in common and got along really well.

Whenever she has free time, Jane and I like to meet up for coffee or go hiking on the nearby nature trails. We also like to see movies together or go out for dinner to some of our favourite restaurants.

I appreciate her loyalty and trustworthiness the most. I know that whenever I need help with something or just need someone to talk to, she will always be there with a listening ear and helpful advice. She has a great sense of humour which helps lighten any heavy moods, filling all of our gatherings with laughter and fun moments.

Jane is also very creative and often suggests interesting ideas for us to do together that I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. She is always full of energy and enthusiasm which motivates me to stay positive even during the toughest times. In short, Jane is an amazing friend who makes me feel supported, accepted, and loved!

Speaking Test, Part 3 Model Answers

1. How does your society see friendship?

In my society, friendship is seen as a valuable and essential part of life. It is an important factor in our well-being, contributing to overall health and happiness. We highly value the relationships we make with friends, which provide us with emotional support and meaningful connections. They become part of our families, and it is not uncommon for many generations of two families to stay connected to each other as close friends.

2. Are friends important to people your age?

Yes, they are. As teenagers, it is essential for young people to have strong social bonds and meaningful connections with their peers. But I think at our age, as working professionals, having strong friendships can provide us with invaluable advice and emotional support during difficult times, making them essential for our mental health and wellbeing.

3. Do you think friends are more important to the older or younger generation?

I believe that friendship is equally important both to older people as well as young adults like myself. For elderly individuals who may be facing loneliness after retirement or due to other circumstances, having close relationships with trusted friends can be a great source of comfort and companionship. For younger people like me, friendships provide us with the opportunity to learn social skills like communication and problem solving that will benefit us throughout our lives.

4. Do you agree with the saying that childhood friends are the best?

Yes, I absolutely agree that childhood friends often hold some of the most special relationships in our lives due to their unique connection of growing up together and sharing experiences and memories of many years. Childhood friendships often remain strong even over long distances due their deep-rooted connection from shared history since childhood days.

5. Do you think childhood friendship can last forever?

I believe it is possible for childhood friendships to last forever, though it depends on many factors such as location, lifestyle differences, amount of contact, etc. Even if these bonds become weaker over time, there still remains a strong emotional attachment between individuals who were once very close. I personally have had the same best friend since grade one!

6. What is your opinion about making friends online?

This has become an increasingly popular option among people of all ages over recent years, given its convenience compared to physically meeting someone face-to-face. That said, I would suggest caution in forming these types of relationships because it is harder to gauge someone’s true intentions or character when you can’t talk to them in person.

7. What is the effect of social media on friendships?

Social media has radically changed how we form relationships today, providing various platforms offering instantaneous access for staying connected almost anywhere at any given time. This has led people my age particularly to become reliant on technology when communicating with their peers. Though this offers greater convenience in terms of keeping up with people’s whereabouts or events in their lives, I feel like this disconnects us from truly understanding what someone else might be feeling, their emotions. Body language plays a big role in that, and text messages alone are lacking that important component.
